About Shenandoah Valley

The Shenandoah Valley stretches about 200 miles across the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny Mountains. The Shenandoah Valley encompasses seven counties in Virginia, Frederick County, Clarke County, Warren County, Shenandoah County, Page County, Rockingham County, and Augusta County as well as two counties in West Virginia, Berkeley County and Jefferson County. The Shenandoah River, for which the valley is named after, flows into the Potomac River. The Shenandoah is one of the rare North American rivers that flows to the north. Until about the 1730's, the Blue Ridge Mountains barred the fertile rich land of the Valley away from settlers. Finally, it was the German and then the Scottish immigrants that decided to take up roots. The Shenandoah Valley's role in the Civil War was that of a passage way for the Confederates to conduct their raids. The battles Shendaoah Valley includes the Battle of Front Royal, Battle of Kernstown I, Battle of Kernstown II, Battle of New Market, Battle of Tom's Brook, Battle of Wayneboro, Battle of Winchester I and the Battle of Winchester II. The Shenandoah Valley, along with it's stunning beauty, is a popular tourist attraction and is becoming a place where "city slickers" are starting to call home.
